Blythe Monheit, M.D.

Board Certification: Ophthalmology
Fellowship Training: Glaucoma

Dr. Monheit is from Birmingham, Alabama, where she was exposed to medicine at an early age by her father, who is a practicing Dermatologist. Her interest in Ophthalmology stemmed from observing his eyelid skin cancer removal surgeries at the Eye Hospital. Although there to spend the day with her father, she inevitably found herself gravitating towards the eye surgeries, which fascinated her.

She attended undergraduate school at Washington University in St. Louis, where she was on the Dean's list and a member of the National Pre-Medical Student Honors Society. As a French major, she attended New York's University affiliate school in Paris, France and later a pre-medical student exchange program to work in l'Hopital Lenval, the Children's Hospital in Nice, France.

Dr. Monheit received her doctorate of medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. After receiving her medical degree, she completed a transitional internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas. Her ophthalmology residency as well as glaucoma fellowship was completed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and The Eye Foundation Hospital. After completing her fellowship, she was a clinical instructor of ophthalmology and glaucoma; and she assumed responsibility for resident education and training in glaucoma.

Dr. Monheit joined The Glaucoma Institute in July 2006. Since that time she has actively sought to increase community awareness of glaucoma through patient education and seminars with the Seton Hospital network and various media outlets. She is frequently called upon to speak at meetings of professional societies and healthcare organizations on glaucoma diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Monheit is an active member of the American Glaucoma Society, Austin Ophthalmology Association, Travis County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Texas Ophthalmology Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In her spare time, she enjoys running and hiking in Austin, travel, and spending time with friends and family.
